Sacred and Secular Lives

As humans, we have an extraordinary ability to compartmentalize different aspects of our lives. This skill allows us to address each area efficiently, helping us manage day-to-day responsibilities and function as productive members of society.

However, there’s one type of compartmentalization that often works to our detriment: the separation of sacred and secular. Too often, we confine God to church services, prayer times, or life group meetings. Outside of these contexts, we live no differently than someone who doesn’t believe in God at all.

Recognizing the Divide

I first became aware of this division while reading Emotionally Healthy Spirituality by Peter Scazzero (you can find an Amazon link to the book under the Resources tab and support our mission by purchasing it there). In one chapter, Scazzero discusses how many Christians struggle to fully integrate God into every area of their lives, even when they think they already do.

For example, we might embrace God’s love and grace on Sundays but complain about life’s struggles throughout the week. We might harshly reprimand someone, thinking we’re improving the situation, yet leave them feeling crushed. Or we might call ourselves devout Christians but neglect opportunities to serve others, the church, or our community.

Living an Integrated Life

It’s time to bridge the gap between our sacred and secular lives. We must bring God into everything we do. Just because we find ourselves in a group of non-believers doesn’t mean acting in a Christ-like manner is inappropriate or counterproductive. In fact, no matter the situation, living according to God’s will always leads to better outcomes.

God knows us better than we know ourselves. His lessons are timeless and universally applicable. By staying connected to Him, we can navigate life more effectively and with greater purpose.

Practical Steps for Incorporating God Into Daily Life

Here are a few practices that have helped me integrate Christ into every aspect of my life:

  1. Communicate with God Regularly
Talk to God multiple times throughout the day. This doesn’t have to be a daunting task—it can be as simple as spending five minutes in prayer in the morning and evening. Use this time to express gratitude, seek guidance, or ask for help. These moments strengthen your relationship with God and make turning to Him a natural habit.

  2. Engage with Scripture Daily
Read the Bible daily, along with a commentary to deepen your understanding. For those less experienced with scripture, commentaries can illuminate context and meaning. This practice not only helps you learn from God’s Word but also keeps Him at the forefront of your thoughts throughout the day.

  3. Pray Before Stressful Situations
One of the most transformative habits I’ve developed is praying before stressful or challenging moments. In college, I would pray before exams or discussions with professors to center myself and focus on what truly mattered. Today, I use this practice before difficult meetings, presentations, or interactions with challenging coworkers. Each time, I find myself calmer, more effective, and better able to enjoy the moment.

A Life Fully Surrendered

God is a loving Father who wants to be involved in every aspect of our lives. All we need to do is invite Him in and remain mindful of His presence. Pray daily, turn to God in both trials and triumphs, and let His teachings guide your actions. By doing so, you’ll experience greater peace, purpose, and fulfillment.

Now go and live an integrated life, where every moment reflects God’s love and grace. You’ll be better for it—and so will the world around you. Good luck!
